Hum Dono Hain Alag Alag is a romantic comedy that airs on STAR One since July 13, 2009. It initially started airing from Monday to Thursday, at 10 pm, but Friday was soon added to the schedule after two weeks in the same time slot.[1]Hum Dono Hain Alag Alag is a story of two odd couples, how they come together, their conflicts and how they work around the strange situation in which they find themselves.[2]
Plot
Varun "Tappu" (Yash Pandit), the oldest son of the Kothari family, has had his proposal of marriage rejected — the 22nd time this has happened to him. At the same time, his younger brother Aditya "Adi" (Manish Raisinghania) and his girlfriend, Mallika, are in a restaurant to celebrate the first anniversary of their relationship. Through all this, Avantika (Dimple Jhangiani) is at her house and describes her dream man to her friends and grandfather, Omkar. The show also introduces Rajshree (Harsha Khandeparkar), who is the Kothari family's neighbour and their daughter's best friend. She has had feelings for Adi since childhood.
Tappu sees Avantika at a restaurant and falls for her at first sight. He tells Adi that he is in love with Avantika but doesn't know her name. They plan a sale in their saree store where she is sure to come so that Tappu can find out her name.
Adi, with the help of Mallika, trains Tappu on how to impress a girl. Tappu is due to meet Mallika at a park but when she arrives Tappu, being nervous, walks away. Avantika notices Tappu but can't make out his face.
Avantika visits the sale in the saree store, and Tappu fails to talk to her. Avantika, who is still dreaming of the man in the park, visits his house by chance.
Meanwhile, with Adi totally in love with Mallika, his mother, Adu, sees that Rajshree loves Adi and makes her admit it. She proposes Rajshree as Adi's bride to his father, Mafatlal. He agrees thinking Anu is talking about Mallika. Rajshree is heartbroken when Adi declares Mallika as his life partner.
With their agreement, Mafatlal agrees to wed Adi and Mallika on the same day as Tappu and Avantika.
Tappu realizes that Avantika loves a part of Tappu, his avatar at the date (which doesn't exist anymore) and writes her a letter telling the truth. But the letter gets in the hands of Omkar before Avantika.[3]
Characters
Main Characters
- Varun "Tappu" Kothari (Yash Pandit) is the eldest son of the Kotharis and he works in the family-run sari store. He is soft spoken and polite. In spite of being the elder son, Varun does not have much say in any of the family affairs and always finds himself at the back end. He is quiet by nature and is not well-versed in conversing with a woman unless he's selling her clothes. Varun is extremely methodical and likes to stick to a routine. He hates trying anything new and his immediate reaction to anything is always a "no". Varun falls for Avantika at first sight at a restaurant while she quarrels with her grandfather.
- Avantika "Avi" Trivedi (Dimple Jhangiani) lives with her grandfather since she lost her parents at a very young age. In spite of being brought up with a lot of care, she still yearns the love of a family. She always manages to get her way. She is an attractive girl — a live wire, who loves to dream, loves to dance and lives her life to the fullest. She is affable, very open-hearted, and gets a lot of good will and love from everyone around her. She wants to be in love but doesn't have a clear image of the man of her dreams. But she does want a family that will love and accept her. Avantika gets that clear image in Varun, but that Varun doesn't exist.
- Aditya "Adi" Kothari (Manish Raisinghania) is Varun's younger brother. He is charming, flirtatious, outgoing, adventurous, loves parties, believes in trying everything at least once, and quite a fitness freak. At 24, he too helps his father in expanding the family business. Suave and street-smart, Adi is the opposite of his meek brother. He knows how to extract money (among other things) from his miser dad. For Aditya, love has already happened and cannot happen again. Marriage thus is a necessity more to silence the pressures of his mother than his need for a life partner. Aditya is ready to fulfill his responsibilities as a husband. Aditya has no hint of the feeling Rajshree has for him and never remembers her name, except that it has "shree" in it and has already called her "Jayshree", "Bhageshree", "Devashree" and even "Sridevi".
- Rajshree Goradia (Harsha Khandeparkar) is Varun's best friend Gajendra's sister. She is the typical girl that would fit the bill of a matrimonial advertisement. She is a quiet, homely, girl who believes in putting others' needs before hers. She has been brought up with the idea of marriage, the ideal kind, where the wife does everything she can to please her husband and his entire family. She goes to the temple every day. She loves Aditya and makes frequent trips to the Kothari household to get a glimpse of him and get noticed by him. In spite of doing everything right, all of Rajshree's attempts to get acknowledged by Adi end up futile.[4]
Support Characters
- Mafatlal Kothari is the father of Varun, Aditya and Parvati. He is a miser, in a funny way, and hates expenses whether little or more. He keeps blabbering at any expense he can see. Mafatlal hates Varun because he reminds him of his own failures.
- Anu Kothari is Mafatlal's wife. She is very caring and loves her family. She is the opposite of her husband as she loves Varun the most amongst her children.
- Dadaji is the father of Mafatlal. He is lazy and mostly keeps quiet. He loves sweets despite his diabetes. Anu used to secretly give him sweets until, on his birthday, she learns that his sugar level has risen too high.
- Daadi is Mafatlal's mother. She is religious and very strict. It is only she who can keep Mafat's mouth shut when he starts his blabbering. She shows more affection towards Varun and Parvati than Aditya.
- Parvati "Paro" Kothari is the younger sister of Varun and Aditya. She visits college and Rajshree is her best friend.
- Gajendra "Gajju" Garodia is Varun's best friend and Rajshree's older brother. If not Aditya, Gajju is the first person Varun asks for advice. He gives advice but it rather rarely ends up with good results. He also keeps asking weird questions to Mafatlal and, recently, Omkar.
- Mallika is Aditya's girlfriend. They recently celebrated one year of their relationship. She doesn't really love Aditya but his money. She has, for a long time, been trying to persuade Aditya to get married, but he has always put her down for he wants Varun to get married first. She criticised Varun once, and it had landed a short fight with Aditya, showing Aditya's love and responsibility towards his family.
- Omkar/Daddu is Avantika's grandfather. He raised her with a lot of love and care. He is in search for a groom for Avantika so that he can see her get married before he dies.
- Ram and Leela are husband-and-wife maids in the Kothari household. Ram is very slow at his work and is easily fooled and has a bad, rather comic, relation with Mafatlal, who has reportedly not given Ram's salary for few moths as penalty of his slow action. Leela is quick at her work and also serious and likes to make fun of Ram.
